Discover how to escape the "overflow" trap and protect your health by focusing only on the 20% of work that actually matters. Here is my review of a life-changing Japanese work-hacks course, paired with a few reflections on productivity and local culture.
-------------------
毎日メール200通、連日深夜残業だった僕がそこから抜け出した方法をご紹介します。いまのオーバーフローの状態はあなたご自身の考え方をシフトさせることで変化させられるかもしれません。
- Description

In English:
I'll share how I escaped from a situation where I was receiving 200 emails a day and working late into the night every day. Your current state of overload might change by shifting your own mindset.
Description
"80% of work isn't actually essential."
"You only need to focus on the remaining 20%."
If your boss told you that, wouldn't you feel a weight lifted off your shoulders?
And that's exactly what you need to do.
The rest depends on your commitment.
I myself worked under constant overload for a long time.
And it ruined my health.
By reversing my thinking, the more I narrowed down my work, the better I became with clients, and the higher the quality of my work output.
Now I have enough time to dedicate to things I enjoy.
I hope this course contains hints to help you "decide how you use your time" without being tied down by a company.
"I want to use my time for myself."
"I work hard, but I also want to fully pursue my own interests."
"I simply want to go home early."
If you feel this way, I would be happy if I could bring about even a small positive change.
I look forward to seeing you in the course.
What you’ll learn
How to leave work early while maintaining high-quality output
How to increase work productivity
How to escape overflow
How to create time for yourself
You'll be able to imagine a little bit of what you can do when you create time for yourself
Are there any course requirements or prerequisites?
None in particular

Some of the advice from the course:
Check the source of the silent killer tasks:
- chat message
- unorganized emails
- long emails
- Q&A emails, they usually never ends...
- Let's get together meetings
-------------------
Personal story from me:
Around 4-5 years ago, when I was super active in Python, I was invited to the HQ of the biggest pharma company in Denmark to advice how to solve the problem, that the employees spend far too much time to send email.
They wished me to use a Japanese technique, but I used Python, as they gave me data. So I worked before for Fujitsu in Lodz, Poland. I also worked at Saint Clair in Blenheim, New Zealand.
From these places, where they all use Japanese 5S, I learned that not everything needs to be handled on the same way.
In Denmark, Japanese solutions are still very exotic, and it takes more time, and practice to understand that some information need a box to put in, or like a mechanical tool needs a workshop to place.
But handling data, like how many hours the Procurement team spends on sending email, when they start the shift or make a PO change, these informations need Python.
So, I was super active in Python, and I made 36 analysis in 3,5 hours.
The Operation manager in the HQ did not want to believe me... why? That time, most of the IT people were web page developer at the company... and not to much to do with data management...
Why do people send so much emails?
- they do not know their own job.
- they were hired as they were sympathetic, but not competent
- the other side on the email has the same problem, they are not competent and they do not know the basic of their jobs...
- sending emails looks like if you are productive... so the measurement of the productivity had very bad focus...
Then new questions will come:
- what is the local culture?
- what is the local culture for locals?
- what is the local culture for foreigner?
- Yes! Bias exists....
A lot of misunderstanding grow in Denmark, here are some example:
- if you are able to finish a task, than probably you hired a 100 people from India to work instead of you
- if your garden is beautiful, than probably you have slaves
- if you know how to use GPS and travel 1 hour in Denmark to the sea, than it is a vacation
- if you are tired, and you take one day-off, than you must be sick, as 1 day-off is not a vacation
- in Denmark, women have the right to reject s*x inside the marriage, but single women must suffer from pushy men, who would like to be the boyfriends... it is a paradox, as other women also aggressively support this imbalance of the men's and women's right... very bad...
